The Val Big Band concert devoted to the music of Duke Ellington will be held at Salle Les Alambics on Saturday, February 28 at 8:00 pm and on Sunday, March 1ᵉʳ at 5:00 pm.
On the occasion of the 2026 season, an evening will be dedicated to the music of Duke Ellington, an emblematic figure of jazz. World-renowned pianist, conductor and composer, Edward Kennedy Ellington is one of the most influential creators of the XXᵉ century. A prolific songwriter, he left behind over 1,500 compositions in a variety of genres, including several iconic melodies still performed around the world, such as Mood Indigo, Sophisticated Lady, In a Sentimental Mood and Caravan.
His musical universe, marked in the 1920s by the “jungle” style blending primitive sounds and harmonic sophistication, won over a wide audience. For over half a century, Duke Ellington’s orchestra toured the world, bringing together exceptional soloists such as Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Clark Terry, Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Blanton and Barney Bigard.
Under the direction of Michel Weber, the Val Big Band will offer a rereading of some of Ellington’s most famous pages, as well as rarer pieces recently rediscovered. For these concerts, the participation of pianist Daniel Perrin and saxophonist Yvan Ischer will shed a passionate and inspired light on this timeless musical heritage.
