The Fondation Pierre Gianadda has announced that Maria João Pires will not be performing on April 22, the 81-year-old Portuguese pianist having decided to end her career. This decision, made public in Lisbon during the presentation of the Helena Vaz da Silva Prize, follows a stroke in 2024.
The recital will be given by Marc-André Hamelin, a Canadian pianist internationally renowned for his virtuosity and exceptional artistry. The program will include works by Debussy, Medtner and Rachmaninoff, highlighting the rich piano repertoire of the XIXᵉ and XXᵉ centuries.
