The route which leads to the dam is in fact the added climb of two passes, the Col de la Forclaz and the Col de la Gueulaz culminating respectively to 1'528 and 1'965 metres. Made famous by its dinosaur footprints, this itinerary had the honour of welcoming the Tour de France procession on 20th July 2016!
The town of Martigny is the starting point in the valley of this long climb of more than 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) which will surprise you with its varied scenery. You will begin to crisscross the vineyards before completing the Forclaz Pass climb in the larch tree forest. Following a short descent across the Trient municipality you will turn off to the right and start the second climb which gradually gives way to mountain scenery worthy of the great Alpine passes. Don’t hesitate to “refuel” in the village of Finhaut, as the last part of the climb, which takes you to the Emosson dam is very hard.
