For cyclists looking for alpine passes, mountain solitude and amazing views, this high altitude route in central Valais cannot be overlooked.
You start with a very beautiful but also steep assent to the Planches Pass, passing through the villages of Chemin-Dessous (Lower-Chemin) and Chemin-Dessus (Upper Chemin). Continue down a pretty descent to Sembrancher, where you will reach the charming little village of Chamoille via a little uphill slope before coming back down again to Orsières. Be prepared for an uphill ride to Champex-Lac. Catch your breath beside the lake and continue down a windy hill as far as Les Valettes. Be careful! For the keenest cyclists don’t return to Martigny immediately, but start the Petite-Forclaz ascent (if you aren’t afraid of very steep uphill slopes…) Then, finally, take advantage of the descent to Martigny.
