A four-part series
Misericordia, by Lídia Jorge, winner of the 2023 Prix Médicis for Foreign Literature, stands out as a profoundly human and unique work. Based on recordings and notes left by the author’s mother during the final year of her life in a care home, the book weaves an intimate narrative that blends memory, love, the end of life and a perspective on the world. Both poignant and imbued with subtle irony, this text delicately explores family ties, the passing on of knowledge and the human condition. Part diary, part literary creation, Misericordia strikes a remarkable balance between emotion, poetry and lucidity.
