The Incorporation of Valais into the Roman Empire

On Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., the main hall of Martigny City Hall will host a lecture on the incorporation of Valais into the Roman Empire.

Archaeological research conducted over the past two decades at high-altitude Roman military sites between Valais and the Aosta Valley sheds new light on this period. These discoveries, which predate the traditionally accepted date of 16/15 B.C., prompt a reevaluation of how Valais was integrated into Rome’s sphere of influence.

Caroline Brunetti, Romain Andenmatten, and Tristan Allegro, archaeologists with the Cantonal Office of Archaeology, will present the latest theories on this transition, which gradually transformed the Celtic territories of Valais into a Gallo-Roman province. The founding of Forum Claudii Vallensium—now Martigny—marks one of the major milestones in this evolution.

Free admission.
