Conference at the Fondation Pierre Gianadda on Thursday April 25 at 7:00 pm on "Valais at the heart of barbarian Europe".
The Fondation Pierre Gianadda will host the conference “Le Valais au cœur de l’Europe ‘barbare’ (VI-IXe siècles)” on Thursday April 25 at 7:00 pm.
With the exception of a few masterpieces from the treasure of Saint Maurice, the Valais is generally absent from art history textbooks. Yet the importance of this region at the crossroads of the Alps is indisputable, particularly in the centuries following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, when it found itself at the heart of the major “barbarian” kingdoms.
Through a cross-referencing of Lombard, Burgundian and Merovingian artistic evidence, this conference aims to show the contribution of the Valais to the development of medieval visual culture.
