Of oriental origin, this rare plant is a vestige of the cold steppe which colonised the Valais after the retreat of the glaciers almost 10,000 years ago.Educational panelCharrat appears in history in 1224, thanks to a writing which mentions a transaction between Thomas, earl of Savoy, Pierre d'Oron, bishop of Sion and a knight named Jean Visondis. Mythology tells that Adonis, Greek god of beauty, was abandoned at birth in a bush of myrtle. Aphrodite, goddess of love, looked after him. A few years later, a boar killed Adonis who let as much blood flow as Aphrodite's tears: from each of them sprang an adonis.Educational panelThis panel presents some species belonging to the steppe adonis, which includes a remarkable biological diversity.Cross"Adonis" wind turbineWhen put into service in July 2012, "Adonis" was the largest wind turbine in Switzerland. On 15 August 1892, one of the users, after having cleaned the oven, deposited the swab (broom with strip of fabric being used to remove impurities due to fire) at the end of which some embers remained, on a pile of vine branches. The resulting fire destroyed much of the village of Vison.
The oven was rebuilt and changed owners several times. Walkers can now admire the fully-restored oven.Educational panelThe Rhone Valley is the only region of Switzerland fulfilling the conditions required by the adonis: dry and lean meadows, calcareous substrate, hot summers, cold winters, light precipitation.
However, adonis is a protected flower in Valais. We must therefore respect it and not give in to the temptation to pick it.FountainVison ChapelThe chapel was built in 1536.
