Fondation P. Gianadda: Amandine Beyer [English]

The Fondation P. Gianadda invites you to a new concert on Sunday, November 3, 2024 at 7:30 pm.

In 1720, J.S. Bach inscribed “Sei solo” on his Sonatas and Partitas for violin, a title that perfectly matched the content of the work: six extraordinary pieces for solo violin. But… Just a moment. In correct Italian it should be written, in the plural, “Sei soli”, whereas what Bach wrote literally translates as “You are alone”.

Grammatical error, pun or hidden declaration of extreme sadness? In July of the same year, his first wife Maria Barbara died suddenly. One can only imagine the enormous shock and anguish the composer felt, finding himself alone with four young children. To the point of confessing his loneliness in the title of a work from his great collection? Yet, incredible as it may seem, the years that followed in Köthen were marked by family and creative fulfillment. Married to Anna Magdalena Wilcke, a young court singer, he was supported by a prince who adored music and surrounded by musicians of extraordinary quality, for whom he could compose works without any technical limitations.

And so, in this joyful, sparkling program, Gli Incogniti responds to the Köthen choirmaster: “Non Sei solo”, you are not alone.
