Occident is a punchy, funny and ridiculous play. It features a pathetic, comic couple.
Every night, she waits for him to come back from the Flandres or the Palace, after having had a few drinks with his buddy Mohamed. Every night, in a self-destructive ritual, he sets off a verbal spat of the worst kind, where both spit out their venom. The mechanics of their confrontation take us into the realm of humor – the kind that grates and bites. In this scalpel-like dissection of a couple’s relationship with the world, there’s a concentration of all the little human miseries, all the daily setbacks, all the renunciations, but also – and paradoxically – all the buried hopes and a few hints of a possible eternal love.
The two performers, Anne-Catherine Savoy and Nicolas Rossier, aptly reveal the intoxicating power of Rémi de Vos’s play.
