The ups and downs of the Valais. Philippe Schmid, news reporter.
The first exhibition dedicated to Sédunois photographer Philippe Schmid (1932 – 2002) presents the work of a man who dedicated his life to news reporting in the Valais. A profession he said “had always been in his blood”.
With over 250 photographs and a few film extracts, the exhibition offers a revealing journey through the highs and lows of the Valais between 1958 and 1990. The scenography underlines the disparate content of the information relayed in the media. Factual telescoping, from elections to festivals, from fires to accidents, ending with sport and culture.
In 2001, the press called Philippe Schmid “the memory of the Valais” when he donated twenty-two thousand reports to the Médiathèque Valais-Martigny. Today, through their formal qualities, some of these moments of local life have become universal images.
