Librairie Baobab: Rencontre avec Metin Arditi [EN]

Meeting with Metin Arditi on Thursday May 2 at 6.00 pm at the Baobab bookshop.

The Baobab bookshop invites you to meet Metin Arditi on Thursday May 2 at 6:00 pm, for “L’île de la Française”, published by Grasset.

Late summer 1950, off the Turkish coast, on the island of Saint Spyridon. Life here is slow. After the four years of civil war that shook the country, poverty is everywhere and people are hungry.

Odile, a photographer from Paris, owns a house here. She has learned Greek, loves the place deeply and photographs its inhabitants with passion. A young girl from the island helps her with the housework, and Clio develops a close friendship with Odile. At the age when so many girls take the veil, Clio joins the island’s monastery. The higoumene has an iron grip on his flock. It’s the arrival of a camera in the monastery that turns the nuns’ lives upside down.

Mysterious and harsh, this new novel by Metin Arditi combines his favorite themes: art, exile, the mystery of filiation, faith and the relationship with the body.
