Exhibition “Carrierians, the adventurers of the slate mountain”

Temporary exhibition

Carrierians, the adventurers of the slate mountain

Who knows today that Dorénaz was famous for the quality of its slate and coal? At the end of the First World War, it was the main deposit of the Valais. It’s simple: there were so many mines in the Dorénaz region that, during its heyday, this industry was the main resource of the inhabitants. Hundreds of workers worked there. Some of them lost their lives, victims of silicosis.

It is this slice of local and regional history that will be retraced in an interesting temporary exhibition that will open its doors on June 5th in Dorénaz. Entitled “Carrierans, the adventurers of the slate mountain”, it will deal more particularly with slate and will take place during two years on 60 m2 at the House of Tales and Legends of Dorénaz.

Didactic path

That’s not all: an educational trail will complete the exhibition during the summer. It will present the exploitation of the mines, in the form of a loop in Champex d’Alesse, up to the summit mine of the Méreune.
